Japanese Snack Food Review: Tohato Caramel Corn (chocolate)

TohatoCaramelCorn.jpg

Say hello to the chocolate version of Tohato Caramel Corn. These corn doodles are similar to their strawberry cousins in more ways than one. They too have a light melt in your mouth yet crispy corn doodle base but are slightly less shrimp like looking. This isn’t potentially a good thing either because what they DO look like is fairly reminiscent of something you may have to put in a bag after walking Fido. Yeah, sorry about that but we call them like we see them (and we weren’t calling them “Poo Doodles” for fun). Really, they are visually disturbing and I’m going to have to knock a half pea off for “mental distress”. Shrimp Doodles? Errr…well…OK I guess. Poo Doodles? Eww!

If you can get by the visual reminiscence, however, Poo Chocolate Doodles are pretty darned tasty. They have a cocoa dusting on them (which gets on your fingers more so than the strawberry does) that gives them a nice chocolaty taste without being too bitter either. Combine that with the sweet corn doodle base and you have something you could market as cereal. One of my Guinea Pig even remarked that these critters would be right at home in a bowl of milk. All the guinea pigs agreed that the chocolate corn doodles tasted like Cocoa Puffs straight out of the box.

They also have a slight something else taste to them that we decided must be nutty. It isn’t a distinctly nutty taste, despite showing an almond on the box, but there is a depth of quasi-nuttiness that we attributed to the four different nut powders contained in the doodle. Yes, four. You get your RDA of almond, hazelnut, macadamia nut and peanut paste with these fellas. Those of you with nut allergies might want to take heed. Oh yeah, and also they come with whole roasted almonds too. I mention that as an afterwards because all our almonds fell to the bottom of the package so 95% of the sampling was almondless. We were beginning to wonder what was up with the almond on the packaging when BING almonds. Maybe the packets need to be shaken up a bit, maybe ours just had heavy almonds but whatever the reason, most everyone had doodles sans almonds. The almonds don’t add much, although they are nice in a sort of Cracker Jack roasted nut addition kind of way.

I wasn’t too thrilled with them (I’d rather eat the strawberry or plain ones I think) but everyone else was all about these so knocking a half pea off for presentation and another half pea because they were just not as good as the strawberry iteration (plus the almond weirdness), I’m going to give Tohato Caramel Corn (chocolate) a

of 4 Wasabi Peas out of a possible 5.
