It’s sitting there on a plastic plate with a picnic knife in it, waiting for people to hack off a chunk and snack away. The whole room has a faint whiff of sweetness from it. Full of seeds, and with a bit of rind that must be disposed of. Not the sort of thing that you can eat with decorum. Absolutely not something that you’d want to have near a computer keyboard, although I suppose you could fish some of the lint out from between the keys if you tied a bit of string to a sticky watermelon seed and used it as a sort of fishing lure.

Plus it’s a traditional picnic food, not office fare. Office food is something that arrives in discrete servings, like a cracker, a muffin, a bagel, a cookie. Sometimes you might have a coffee cake that needs to be sliced, but it’s a dry slicing that can easily be done with a little plastic knife, not soppy wet melon surgery. You can carry cake around on a napkin without it soaking through. You can dip it in coffee. You can’t dip watermelon in coffee.

That’d be disgusting.

There’s a big chunk of watermelon in the break room.
