{"id":1539,"date":"2003-09-05T08:29:11","date_gmt":"2003-09-05T13:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.quirkspace.com\/quirkblog\/?p=284"},"modified":"2003-09-05T08:29:11","modified_gmt":"2003-09-05T13:29:11","slug":"shiny-bones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.quirkspace.com\/quirkblog\/?p=1539","title":{"rendered":"Shiny Bones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At work this morning I took a picture of a bottle of some stuff called &#8220;Bone Wax.&#8221;  Despite the name, it&#8217;s not actually a polishing compound&#8230; In fact, if you do a quick Google search, you&#8217;ll learn that Bone Wax is a sterile beeswax compound that is used for hemostasis of bone.<\/p>\n<p>Which means practically nothing if you don&#8217;t speak medical.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you&#8217;ve got me here to provide a translation.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it&#8217;s skeleton spackle.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe fun thing is that the stuff was invented in 1892 by Victor Horsley, and pretty much the same stuff is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finescience.com\/fst\/SurgAcc\/19009-00.html\">still in use today<\/a>.  The bottle I was photographing was from 1978 and it&#8217;s still got Horsley&#8217;s name on it.  Apparently, the formula hasn&#8217;t changed much in the last 111 years.<\/p>\n<p>(Odd little side-note, Horsley died of heatstroke in Iraq while serving as a British Army field surgeon during World War One.  It&#8217;s amazing the things you can find in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epub.org.br\/cm\/n02\/historia\/horsley.htm\">online biographies<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; Yeah&#8230; I was going somewhere with this when I started, but I&#8217;ve forgotten where.
