It’s amazing how many parts of winemaking involve things that share names with medieval torture devices. Both grapes and witches get pressed, for example. And in some unsanitary dual-purpose world, I’m sure that racking wine means something other than using a siphon to move it from one carboy to another.

\nThe plan for this evening is to do a bit of wine torturing, racking the blueberry, last year’s pumpkin, and the cranberry into fresh new carboys. We’ve got two unoccupied ones now, one on loan from my friend Rob and one that we bought from the good folks at the Ypsilanti Brewing<\/a> company.<\/p>\n

I found out about the Ypsi brew co. from a ‘blog called “seat of the revolution.” I’d done a quick search to try to figure out what was going on with the grain silos that I drive past on the way in to work… A couple months ago, the rumor was that they were being rebuilt into a brewpub. There was some construction going on for a while, but nothing terribly visible recently. Turns out they’re having some problems<\/a> getting approval from the city to complete the conversion. In the meantime tho, they’re selling brewing supplies at the Ypsilanti Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.
