There’s been this odd, dark, musty smell that I’ve started noticing at work. At first I thought it was my desk area, but then I noticed it at the conference table, and over by the scanner.<\/p>\n
Then I realized that I haven’t worn these shoes all summer. And I remembered why I stopped wearing them last spring.

\nThere are very few things more embarrassing than realizing that you are responsible for a social faux pas<\/i>, even if no one else notices. It’s like everyone is staring at you, sensing your inner guilt like a dog can sense fear. Somehow even the most innocent phrase can be misconstrued as an accusation. One of the people I was working with this afternoon was talking about the dark, musty office that he used to have in the basement of the old hospital building. The words ‘dark’ and ‘musty’ had a strange resonance to me.<\/p>\n
