It’s not the big transition to the house server yet (mostly because I haven’t gotten the new gear), so no need to update bookmarks or anything. Things’ll be going away at roughly 4pm today and should be back online sometime around 5:30 – 6.

“Should”, of course, being the word that computer types use whenever they know that what they’re doing is a relatively trivial task that could still fail in a spectacular fashion for unforeseen reasons.

Right now things are hosted on a lovely old Blue & White G3 running OS X Server 10.2. It’s a six year old box that’s been up and running a front-line server for five years with only three days of unscheduled downtime, and that was during the big blackout. It’s a damn fine machine, but now that our office has grown from three people to nearly a dozen, tis starting to show signs of reaching its limits.

So… It’s bump up time! By the end of the day, we’ll be on a Grey & White G4 machine running OS X server 10.3. Of course, end of the day for me will be defined as “whenever we’re up and running”.

It’ll be an interesting move. We’ve got a lot of the user folders stored on an external RAID array, so that’ll make things a bit easier. On the other hand we’ll be moving machines and upgrading OS at the same time, so keeping our customizations and configurations intact may be more difficult. We’ll see how it goes.

Time for a bit of a brain swap here at the blog homestead.
