Food Day Weekend

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Posting may be a bit spotty this weekend, partially because I’ll be recovering from the traditional turkey stuffing exercises, but also because this weekend is a great opportunity to get some stuff done around the house that I’ve been meaning to do…

And the answer is…

No.

The network card doesn’t play nice with the old machine… Pity, too. I’d come across a set of really nice instructions on AFP548.com on how to set up an OS X server with a spare network card so that it could act as a router with NAT services…

Maybe some other time.

Downime delay…

Ok, so the server may not be going away for a little bit after all… First I’ve got to see if the Linksys EG-1032 gigabit network card will work in a blue & white G3 Mac.

Fortunately, we’ve got a spare around the office for just this sort of testing.

I’ll post the results here, on the off chance that it might be useful for someone, somewhere…

Scheduled Maintenance

The server may be vanishing briefly this afternoon… Nothing too serious, just putting in a second network card. It’s pretty much an axiom that brief downtime for routine maintenance avoids prolonged downtime for emergency repairs.

Blogspam & Blacklists

There’s a new little ‘bug’ on the bottom of the links column… Clicking on it will take you to the site for a handy Movable Type plugin called “MT-Blacklist”. Among other things, it does a sort of pre-flight check of comments before posting to see if they contain links to any of a list of banned sites. If they do, the comments don’t get posted. It’s a bit heavy-handed, but it’s an effective tool to deal with some of the problems I’ve started to see…

Bellybutton music

Back when we were first dating, my Wife told me about “Bellybutton Movies.” They’re not necessarily movies where people walk around in midriff-baring costumes, bit I’m sure that’d be one possibility. Generally speaking though, the term refers to movies that are fun, lighthearted fare. No great thinking is involved, any villains are two dimensional and soundly defeated. The movie is suitable for children or pretty much anyone else in need of the sort of feel-good innocence that hearkens back to when you used to call the navel a “bellybutton” on a regular basis.

“Willow” is a bellybutton movie. “Apocalypse Now” is not.

Dinner & Wine

Very successful dinner last night.. Had the in-laws over (Hey! I’ve got in-laws!) and served up a dinner of broiled chicken breast with wild rice and steamed broccoli, with assorted cheeses and smoked fish as an appetizer. We served up some of the apple wine too, and it was very tasty.

364

Hey… As of tomorrow, I’ll have been doing this for a year. That’s not bad… And I’ve managed to keep the language fairly clean too.

It’s a conscious decision… I’ve seen the bizarre things that people have put into Google that got them to this site. I don’t want some eight year old kid researching a paper on, say, grasshoppers, to stumble into a profane diatribe about how “The Legend Continues” sucks compared to the old Kung Fu TV series…

OK, I’m not likely to write anything about the series. I don’t watch it, and I’m certainly not going to write a review of it. But if I did, I’d be careful to avoid swearing.

Aloha, eh?

I did my routine check of the server logs this morning and discovered that someone over at the Honolulu Advetiser linked to one of my old entries!

I’m still new enough at this sort of thing to think that’s cool in a geeky sort of way…

So, anyway, hi there! If I’d known you were coming I would have dusted or something… As it is, I’m at least going to reorganize the category archives so that the entries display in chronological order. Otherwise it’ll all start out with us married and then work backwards in time as we fire florists and caterers, dismiss guests, lose a hall and un-propose…

Speakers

In the WCBN studio there were a pair of monitor speakers from Tannoy. Late one night, in keeping with the rather eclectic decor of a student-run radio station, I modified the logo on the speakers by blacking out the initial “T”… Later on, someone added an exclamation point to the end. I don’t know if it ever became an imperative for late night shows, but I liked it…

I’m not just randomly writing here, there’s a trigger for this particular reminiscence… I’ll get to it eventually.
