Odd Numbers

I’ve got a few seconds free between poster prints, so I thought I’d share a little wisdom from the office. All true rules have exceptions. This is how you know they are true rules. For example…

The rule: Avoid odd numbered versions of Adobe Illustrator and Star Trek movies.

The exceptions: Illustrator 9 and Star Trek III

Four tiny white flowers

FourWhiteFlowers.jpg
Four white flowers on a twig. All together they’re about the size of a nickel.

That’s it for today. I came off a week of Smithee stress and walked straight into a week of work stress. I’ll post more when and if I can…

Smithee Stressing

The show is in about two hours, so I figured I’d write a quick little something… Can’t hurt, right?

Plus, I’ve got a song stuck in my head. I’m trying to drown it out by playing the Gilbert & Sullivan playlist on the powerbook. If that doesn’t work, the only option is to get other people humming it. Having a song stuck is like a virus that you can only get over once you pass it along to someone else. The song is “Addicted to Stress” by Jim’s Big Ego… If you want to share in the song addiction, you can watch the video on-line at bigego.com. Hopefully, if enough of you go watch it, it’ll get out of my head and into yours.

Reptilian leaves

ReptileLeaves.jpg
Leaves have always looked kind of reptilian to me when they’re just starting to unfurl. I think it’s something to do with the serrated edges, the visible veins and the glossy sheen on the surface.

Bedraggled blooms

Bedraggled-blooms.jpg
This pretty much sums up how I feel today… It’s kind of unfair that just when you’re beginning to appreciate the way the flowers look, they start to go all wilted. Ah well.

Budding Twigs

TwigBuds.jpg
Yet more signs of spring! The trees outside the office have tiny leaves starting to peek out of the buds.

And yes, I’m posting a lot of pictures this week. I’m doing a lot of Smithee stuff, so I’m too busy to write much. I’m falling back on the whole 1 picture = 1000 words thing and I’m hoping the exchange rate remains that favorable.

Sprouts

WallSprouts.jpg
Plants in an orderly queue. These guys up against the wall are about two or three inches taller than their compatriots further afield… I’m not sure if they just get better water and sun where they are or if their closeness to the wall protected them when the other ones were trimmed down.

Grey bird

GreyBird.jpg
A bird at the feeder on the back of my in-laws’ house. I don’t know what kind of bird… My mom probably would. She’s got the whole bird watching and identification thing going for her… It’s a skill that I’ve never acquired. On the other hand, after years of working tech support, I can identify different types and vintages of Macintosh computers just from a glance at the front bezel… Usually the opportunity crops up when watching movies and TV shows. It’s a completely useless chunk of knowledge, sort of the geek equivalent of knowing the stats for baseball games and players from the early 1900’s.

It is Michigan…

PorchSnow.jpg
And, of course, one of the surest signs of spring in Michigan… Snow! Big wet flakes were falling from the sky last night on the way home after Smithee editing… Very annoying, especially since I’d left my jacket in the office.

Red Maple in the Spring

RedMapleFlower.jpg
The red maple from last year is getting ready to go into leaf… These spiky clusters of flowers and buds are at the ends of each twig, giving the whole tree a festive appearance. It’s like someone decorated it by gluing tiny red pom-poms all over it.
