A resounding “Well, DUH!”

A little something from page 89 of the Apple Xserve User Guide:

Be sure that you always do the following:

  • Keep your server away from sources of liquids, such as washbasins, bathtubs, showerstalls, and so on.

Seriously, why do they even say this? Did they get a lot of service calls from people who’d set up a server farm in their bathtub?

Out of Coffee Error

Coffee-man.jpg
One of my co-workers put the little model-guy that my Wife gave me for Christmas into an appropriate pose for Monday mornings.

Now if it had only been a stylish and functional Coffee Warning mug, this would have been the perfect photo.

Movies to look out for

Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell

Isn’t that a great title? The RCK found it for us in a search on Net Flix. According to the reviews, which are available to subscribers, it’s gotten a star rating of 1.5 out of a possible 10. Sounds like an excellent Smithee candidate. I especially like the plot summary:

The survivors of a nuclear holocaust compete for the love of the last surviving woman – a nymphoid barbarian.

Insert bad pun about ‘car’ma here….

I don’t consider myself an evil person. It’s not that I wish harm on people who drive SUVs. I just enjoy laughing at them when harm happens. Provided it is just minor harm, of course.

Monkey!

There’s a guy just outside my office with a helper monkey. Seeing eye dogs are almost passe around the hospital, but people will stop and ooh and ahh about the cute monkey perched on the shoulder of the guy in the wheelchair. It’s an almost irresistible combination of cool and cute.

Tragic Theory

We’ve jumped on the whole Lemony Snicket “Series of Unfortunate Events” bandwagon… And I’ve developed a theory about what’s REALLY going on. All just idle speculation at this point, obviously, given that I’ve just finished book six out of the eleven that have been released so far. I’m going to try to avoid giving too many spoilers, or to cite anything beyond where my Wife has gotten to (she’s finished book four). In addition to my desire to avoid bibliodomestic strife, this is where I began to formulate my theory.

So, if you’re enjoying the series and don’t want to have your reading ruined by my theoretical ruminations, stop here. Otherwise, read on…

RTFM Moment

Yesterday I spent some time setting up the xServe at the new office… It’s a very nice server. It’s going to be replacing a blue & white G3 for our file serving duties. It’s a bit of a step up. There was one minor problem while setting it up, so pardon me while I geek out a bit and post the solution here:

Read the manual.

By which I mean read the big annoying sixty page PDF manual, not the simple eight page one.

Turbo Rats!

One of the docs here has been working on a rat breeding program, selecting for athletic ability in order to study genetic predisposition for particular diseases… There’s a whole press release on it from last year when he was in Ohio, so it’s not exactly breaking news… On the other hand, now that he’s here I got to film him. And the rats.

Informed Comment

Caught Professor Juan Cole’s lecture on democracy in Iraq. Outstanding stuff, despite the strange influx of freaky LaRouche followers who decided the best way to get publicity was to pack the line for the Q&A session after the lecture. And that’s enough about them.

Canine Occupation: Day 1

The dogs arrived last night & are settling in, with only minor difficulty. Lucy wet her cage and Charlie wet on the towel we had put by the front door for wiping snow off their feet. Lucy may have been too excited by the new & strange neighborhood to take care of her business when we were taking her for late-night walkies before putting her to bed. Charlie is probably just showing a bit of attitude.
