Unnecessary suffixing

Things learned at work today:

There is no need to add the suffix “-palooza” to anything involving database mechanics unless you want your co-workers to snort coffee out their noses.

Especially when a similar effect can be achieved with the slightly more time-tested suffix “-O-Rama”.

Retrotech!

We found a couple old 3/4″ video tapes at work that needed converting to something a bit more.. modern. Fortunately, we have a big ‘ol 3/4″ player which someone was just going to throw away. It worked great once the cobwebs were vacuumed out and the play head was given a good scrubbing with 99% isopropyl alcohol. I was able to hook it directly to a MiniDV camcorder and transfer things directly to digital tape.

Call it “Creationism Lite”

For those of you who have been under a rock for the past week or so, you might have missed Mr. Bush coming out in favor of teaching so-called “Intelligent Design” in schools.

Personally, I’m surprised he’s waited this long before taking a swipe at evolution. It’s pretty obvious that he’s in a serious state of denial about his uncanny resemblance to a chimp…

Concentrated Crazy

What do you get if you take all of the bizarre ranting posters you can find on lamp-posts and park benches in New York City and collect them in one place?

You get this website.

.hang {
	text-align: left;
	text-indent: -3em;
	margin-left: 3em;
}

Guys, you’re not even trying…

For those of you who aren’t familiar with phishing scams, the basic idea is that they try to trick you into sending them your financial information by pretending to be from a company you do business with. Basically, if you get an email from a bank insisting that you confirm your account details under threat of suspension, don’t believe it.

So, I just got a phishing e-mail, purportedly from Paypal. Thing is, whoever sent this one didn’t do a terribly good job.

Nonexistent dialogue

A couple days ago I had a brief flash of a scene from a movie which doesn’t exist yet. I dunno if it’s gonna be a buddy-movie or a comedy or what, but I figured I should write it down somewhere. So why not here?

More cutting-edge retrophilia

Over at Turtle Services they’ve got a huge collection of old 78 RPM records converted to mp3 format. There’s something strangely appealing about the idea of using an iPod to play a song originally released on a chunk of shellac. Some digital restoration has been done to the songs, but they are still obviously in glorious monaural sound.
