Indy News

I’ve been disappointed with a lot of the major news neworks lately. I could go off an a rant about corporate control of news networks, the myth of the liberal media and all that jazz, but I think it’d be more useful to just post links to some alternate news sources.

I’ve been consistently impressed with Britain’s Guardian Unlimited online newspaper. Sure, it’s part of some soulless media conglomerate oppressing the hard-working common man by accepting advertising dollars from multinational corporations whose only goal is to grind us all under the jackboot of yadda yadda yadda… But it’s a darn good read.

If you’re a breaking news addict, you should check out www.agonist.org. This guy has incredible sources. His stories are hours ahead of the major news outlets. Naturally that means he sometimes gets rumors that don’t pan out, but he posts corrections, updates and retractions on a regular basis. He’s also got an RSS feed for low-bandwidth headline browsing.

There are more in-depth articles over at www.indymedia.org. It’s a huge collective of sites dotted all over the world. The articles are from an unabashedly left-leaning perspective, but it’s a great source for on-the-scene reporting, especially considering how much the commercial networks have cut back on their international coverage.

The Memory Hole is a sometimes shocking site which often has archives of stories and pictures that have been ‘edited’ off of the sites which originally produced them. For example, they show how mention of the police sharpshooters and undercover cops slowly vanished from the three different versions of the New York Times story on the February 15th peace marches.

If you’re looking for video feeds, take a gander over at undercurrents.org. They have a sort of subversive ‘guerllia-camcorder’ video activist atmosphere. I haven’t had much of a chance to check it out myself, but it’s gotten good reviews at other indy news sites.
