News from the home front

My fiancee and I are doing dual sofa blogging right now… Pretty much the only way we could be geekier would be if we had an instant messanger program running and used that instead of talking to each other.

It’s interesting… One of my neighbors has a wireless network set up too. It shows up in the Airport menu and it’s called BEACH_HOUSE… It’s password protected, so I don’t know if it’s high-speed or not.

Not that I’d swipe bandwidth off of their connection just because it’s faster than a 56k modem or anything. I’m just curious. Besides, we’re just at the edge of their usable range, so it doesn’t show up if there’s any kind of interference.

Speaking of high speed internet access, we’ve got to get something better than dial-up at the house. We visited some of my Fiancee’s friend’s earlier (I’ll call them Shar and Dirge, since those are their usual online aliases) and they’ve got a cable modem. Even with three computers hooked up via a router and hub, their transfer speed beats the pants off of ours. Right now we’ve sort of promised a cable modem to each other as a mutual first Christmas present, but my boss has made some comments about getting me set up with something so that I can do remote server admin stuff from home if needed… We’ll see.

The cats are going nuts right now. That may seem like a total non-sequitur, but it does follow a sort of twisted path from the previous stuff… You see, I spent most of the afternoon working on clearing stuff out of the way upstairs to make room for things from my Fiancee’s condo. Shar and Dirge and their family are going to be moving in there at the end of the month, so we need to get her stuff out and make it habitable. Once enough stuff was out of the way upstairs, I was able to put some of my Fiancee’s books up on shelves. This left some empty cardboard boxes, which got chucked downstairs. And the little kitty loves playing in boxes…

All clear now?

Anyway, the two cats have been playing ‘Ambush!’ all day. Vandy will lurk around the corner and bat a cat toy down the hall to attract Isaac’s attention. Isaac will follow the toy, and Vandy will pounce on him from behind. In retaliation, Isaac will burrow under the comforter on the bed (a feat that Vandy has yet to learn) and he’ll then pounce on her as she wanders by. Generally, they’re living up to the reputation that prompted their nickname of “The Weirdoes.”

We’ve got Weirdo Buttons now too! We ordered a button maker for use with the Smithees, and we decided to test it out with some of the photos I took a while ago. Apple was having a ‘special deal’ for .mac members where you could get 100 4×5 photos for free from their iPhoto service. I tried it out to see if the results were any good (they are), but I had about 75 photos left by the time the free program was running out, so I ordered five of everything in my photo gallery, plus a couple of my Fiancee’s cats.

The button maker works well too, apart from some beginner’s mistakes like forgetting to put the metal back in behind the picture… It’ll certainly make some good stuff to give away at the next big show. Which reminds me, I’ve got to get back to working on some animations after work… Perhaps on Monday.

Wow. This has turned into a long and diverse ramble. I think I’ll end it here.
