Fun phone call last night from a friend of mine who was tuned into local news. It seems there was some sort of “Chemical accident” at a metal plating plant about a mile or two away from my house.
I still have no idea what was leaked, but local residents were advised to close all windows, turn off all AC or ventilation and stay on the upper stories of their homes. We did everything but the last bit… The Wierdos have had it impressed upon them that if they go upstairs then they are BAD CATS! and for the most part they’ve gotten used to the idea. We debated for a while and decided to stay downstairs with a cat on hand to serve as a mine-shaft canary. We reasoned that if Isaak passed out or anything, that’d be warning enough to head for the attics.
On the other hand, my sister lives a bit closer to the plant, so we called her up and passed the warning along. I’m not sure if I woke her or not, but if I did it was for a good reason… Unlike the rude awakening she got on Sunday, which wasn’t my fault at all. Y’see, my Fiancee sometimes has a cruel streak… We were over at my sis’ place for an evening of sushi, origami and bad movies, and after a wonderful meal and a terrible movie my Fiancee decided that it’d be funny to set her kitchen alarm clock for around 4am… Maybe it was payback for when my sis’ cats set off her burglar alarm and we got a phone call from the police at 1am asking if we knew about any problems… I don’t know. I’m just going to stay out of the way of this one.
Anyway, last night we had a quiet evening with our mine-shaft cat waiting for plastic-suited government agents to herd us all out of our homes and off to a hastily erected decontamination and quarantine camp where those of us lucky enough to survive exposure to the strange chemicals would develop unearthly powers and become vengeful villains or noble heros for the new millennium… Oh wait. Sorry. We saw X2 on Sunday and it’s kind of colored my perception of things… Nothing like that happened, of course. The government agents were wearing paper suits.
Plastic suits are so 1980…
