On a Stick

Not much today… It’s a wandering about type day for me. Every time the Art Fair rolls around, my boss schedules us time to wander about and refresh our creative batteries. It makes good sense, considering that we’re creative types. If it was an actuarial office or something like that, I’d be a bit more skeptical.

At any rate, I’m going to be out and about today… I may have a stack of photos to upload over the next few days. My main concern is going to be keeping cool and hydrated. I’ve got a two quart bottle of beverage in my duffel and a goofy hat to keep the sun off of my noggin.

One of the traditional features of an Art Fair seems to be people selling yard junk. Something shiny on a stick that you can shove into your lawn. I’m not likely to get anything like that. So far as I can tell, it’s just a magnet for bird poop.

Another common feature is the Cool Thing of the Year. A couple years ago it was purses made from old license plates. Again, that’s not something I’m likely to buy.

In general, I’ll be trying to perfect the walk that Terry Pratchett described in his Discworld books as “Proceeding.” It’s a slow leg swing, using the minimum of effort to propel the walker down the street at a leisurely pace. It can be done for prolonged periods of time, and it’s usually used to describe an officer of the law on patrol, as in, “I was proceeding north on Treacle Mine Road when I observed the defendant running south with a bent-license-plate purse in his hand. He fell down after knocking over a display of shiny things on a stick, at which point I placed him under arrest.”

Anyway that’s my plan, but with less arresting and more photograpy.
