Great gobs of goo

The blueberry wine is alive. I generally put a paper towel over the mouth of the carboy when the wine is starting so that air can get in, but dust can’t. I hold it in place with a sterilized rubber band or hair-tie. The blueberry started foaming up a bit the night before last, and it did it even more yesterday. This morning it was insane. The towel was bulging and stained purple from berry juice, and when I removed it from the top, there was a near-volcanic outpouring of pulped berry bits.

I had no idea that the paper towel could hold up under the kind of pressure that was coming out of that thing. I really would have expected it to shred, or for the elastic to have been pushed off of the bottle neck. It was amazing! And it just kept on going!

By the time it had stopped, there was an inch deep layer of pulp and juice in the sink. I scooped a bunch of it out, and rinsed the rest into the drain basket. Unfortunately, some got into the drain. Well… A lot got into the drain. We wound up getting in to work a little late this morning because I was attacking the sink with a pair of plungers, trying to clear the blueberry plug out of the drain.

It’s still there.

We’re going to be doing some shopping on the way home from work today… Some of it is supplies for the party this Saturday, but we’re going to swing by a hardware store too. They may have some drain gunk that’ll dissolve the fruit bits without eating the pipes…
