The full release version of the Mac Neverwinter Nights arrived on Friday! Just in time to be shuffled aside while we finished cleaning and prep work for the party on Saturday… I was able to play around with it for a bit on Sunday and, so far, it’s pretty darn impressive. I did note a few oddities in multiplayer mode though.
The first couple of times that I tried bringing multiplayer mode up, it took a very long time to react. It actually took long enough that I thought the game had completely frozen, and if I hadn’t been working on two computers at the same time, I probably would have given up… As it is, with a bit of playing around on Sunday night, I think I figured out what the problem is.
I think that the game is pausing because it’s checking for some validation on the internet… And when it can’t find it, it times out and lets us continue with a LAN game. My Airport hub works as the DHCP server for my home network. It’s only when it’s not dialed in to my ISP that the Macs take a their own sweet time to start up multiplayer games. If the hub is dialed in, the Macs start multiplayer mode without a pause.
On the other hand, the house PC pops right up, dialed in or not. Since I’m mostly going to be playing LAN games, I’m hoping that there’s some timeout setting that could be adjusted… I’ve posted a question over at the Neverwinter Nights Mac Forum about it. We’ll see…
