There are some times when I really like driving a small car… This morning, for example, I wound up with the last parking spot in the lot because all the other cars that were circling around were big SUV type things that wouldn’t fit.
On the other hand, sometimes it can be a pain. Especially if you need to haul heavy things. Right now, I’ve got the tiles, mortar, grouting and other gear for the bathroom floor in the back of the bug, and it weighs a ton.
Not a literal ton. Maybe 200 pounds. Enough to make a heavy duty shopping cart sag in the middle at any rate. It also makes the bug handle differently. Accelleration is off, breaking distance has increased. All the good stuff you get when you’re schlepping fifty square feet of ceramic tile and the goo you need to stick it down with.
When I was a kid, my folks got a load of sand from a building supply quarry Oop North. They were driving a VW microbus at the time, which meant that to carry it home my dad had to take out the seats and line the back with heavy plastic. The folks at the quarry put about a six inch layer of sand on the floor, and I remember using the back of the van as a sort of mobile sandbox on the ride home. I sort of sculpted a seat and dug out a footrest… I recall thinking how cool it would be if the sand could be there all the time.
But looking back now, I can imagine how much of a pain it must have been to drive.
