Hm… Everquest or Meathooks?

Ok, so one of the folks in the office made the old “EverQuest = EverCrack” joke, talking about how addictive online games are. Well, that may be, but it beats the current popular activity torn from today’s headlines: “Meat hook dangling craze mystifies police.”

Now I know there are parents who don’t want their kids playing computer games all summer, but given this as an alternative? I’d bet they’d open their wallets in a heartbeat for a decent PC, Lost Dungeons of Norrath, and a subscription. It certainly seems like a healthier pastime than hanging around on the beach all day.

Skagway Shoreline

Next to the dock in Skagway is a huge cliff face that has been painted with hundreds of flags and signs from the ships that have visited over the years. I took a couple dozen photos of the cliff from our cabin balcony. This weekend I assembled them into a big composite photo. The little banner at the top is a link to a ~600k jpg image. The full sized TIFF file weighs in at just over 250 MB. I’m trying to decide if I should do a poster sized print of it…

Cold Coffee Shower

Ah, the eternal fun and games of the Secy of State’s office… I headed over there this afternoon to do the yearly Ritual of Plate Renewal. And yes, I know about renewing by mail or via the web – I needed to be there in person for a new drivers license anyway, so I figured I’d take care of the plate at the same time.

Anyway, it seems that they’re having a system-wide computer glitch that had slowed everything to a crawl. At 3:30 I was the 120th person in line, and by 4:15 they’d taken care of less than 50 of the people in front of me.

College Fjord – Calving Glacier

CFGlacier2.jpg
This is the second of a series of shots of a huge section of ice collapsing off of the face of Harvard Glacier in College Fjord. I took four shots of the collapse, which I put together as a short movie. Click on the picture to view it.

Railroad Cards

SkagwayWPYR.jpg
One of the cool souvenirs that we got in Skagway was a set of playing cards from the White Pass & Yukon Route depot shop. They’re a reproduction of the playing cards that they provided to passengers in the early 1900’s. The cards all have photos of various landmarks in the area. I suppose if you’re too busy playing cards to actually look out the window, you’ll at least have some idea of what you missed.

And speaking of missing things and cards, a large set of the postcards we sent out from Alaska haven’t arrived yet. We mailed about 15 cards when we were in Skagway and there’s no sign of them. Kind of vexing.

Ketchikan Pigeon

KetchikanPigeon.jpg
There’s something in the mad, red eyes of a pigeon that makes you realize that they’re just a breadcrust or two away from committing bloody Hitchcockian mayhem. Those people you see feeding the birds in parks are just barely holding them in check. Or perhaps they hope to have a slightly better chance of survival when the inevitable avian revolution comes. Little do they know that their future feathered overlords have come to associate their faces with food…

Juneau Juggler

On Saturday the 3rd My Wife and I were wandering through Juneau Alaska, enjoying the sights of the city and doing some shopping. We’d just left a nifty little used book store and were heading back toward the waterfront when we noticed a sign. It was sort of like the standard ones you see in Ann Arbor, cautioning people that they could be ticketed for skateboarding. This one had a little map of the downtown and a list of forbidden transportation in the area.

Summer Cold

Back from Alaska for less than a week, and I’m sick with a heck of a cold. I’m never fun to be around when I’m ill, and right now I’m producing mucus in industrial quantity. It’s like I’m a Kappa, carrying around an over-full bowl on my head and it pours out whenever I move too fast or look up or down. And since I can’t tilt my head without leaking, it’s sort of put the kibosh on the plans I had to spend the end of the vacation doing yardwork or finishing up some house projects.

Pacific Coast Lighthouse

VancouverLeaving.jpg
One of the multitude of lighthouses on the Pacific shores. This was just outside of Vancouver, and a lovely introduction to the trip.

Vancouver Floatplane

VancouverFloatplane.jpg
A not uncommon view from the deck of the cruise ship. Float planes seem to be a major method of transportation in the Inside Passage. I suppose they’re an excellent choice – they offer the speed of air travel without having to worry about runways. You can just use the existing fjords and harbors and tie up at a dock.
