It’s always odd going back to work after a longish vacation. The strangest thing for me is the combination of new and old things. There were a couple of jobs that came in that are revisions to things I did before the holidays and a couple of things that are brand new.
Topping it all off is the break we took mid-day to catch Steve Jobs’ Macworld Keynote webcast. We dimmed the office lights, hooked my laptop up to the video projector and watched a two hour long, wall-sized projection of grainy, jerky video with stuttering audio.
Actually, it wasn’t quite that bad… We brought the video stream up on a couple of computers and gathered ’round the one that got the best connection. It took a couple of minutes to tune one in, but when we did it was remarkably sharp and smooth. And the sound was impressively clear.
I could blather on for a bit about the list of things from the keynote that we’re lusting after here in the office, but I’m too hungry… One of the other new things for the workyear is the diet. I’m gonna be wearing a tuxedo in front of a crowd of people before the year is out, and I’d rather look like James Bond than Oddjob. As a result, I’m eating more fruits and veggies than before… And less of anything else. So far I’ve finished off two apples, a bell pepper, a small bag of radishes and a small bowl of experimental horseradish/ranch flavored cole slaw.
As an aside, have you ever seen what happens to an unopened jar of mayo after it’s sat in a fridge for a year or two? It’s really fascinating. No pictures of that for y’all, unfortunately. It’s gone trashwards, unbroken safety seal and all…
So yeah, a diet has been added to the workout regimen, and this is the first day of tummy rumblings and occasional disgruntled glances at the bowl of abandoned holiday candy in the breakroom. I’ll keep you all posted on my progress if it works…
