Hallo from the Northlands

Just a quick hey from up north. The UP is still here. I’ve got photos to prove it, and I’ll post them sometime after I get back. Right now I’m connected via my dad’s old PowerMac… It’s approaching antique status for computers, but it still works great for internet stuff.

We drove up Friday night without any problems. Traffic was a bit slow around Saginaw, but not too bad considering that it was the first day of the holiday weekend. Saturday we hung out with the folks and ran up Sugarloaf mountain.

Well, when I say ‘ran’ I mean it in the most laid back sense of the word. We kind of wandered. Enthusiastically, but not too rapidly. Sugarloaf has two trails up, one easy, one not so easy, but both of them have staircases so it’s not like we need saftey gear and ropes or anything. The view from the top was spectacular. There’s been some floodling up here recently, including a dam breakage that washed a plume of silt out into the lake, and you could see how it had drifted into the water, turning the lake brown.

After the climb, we headed out to camp. We did some paving work, laying down some of the flat sandstone from the shore on a patio-like area where my folks are going to be putting a Sauna. It was fun… kind of a combination of weightlifting, puzzle assembly, and playing in a sandbox.

We’re getting ready to head out there again for a lunch thing right now, so I’m gonna cut this short and continue it later… Probably once we get back down there.
