Of course, I’ve got all these updates about the trip back from the UP, I need to post some of the photos I took up there, I’ve got vitriol to spew about the car accident I had yesterday, all sorts of things like that. But first, there’s this.
A duck.
I was walking in to work from my car this morning and there was this duck lurking behind a bush in the woodchips near some new landscaping. I spotted it from about fifteen feet away and slooowly got out my camera. It stayed nice and still while I quietly took off the lens cap, powered things up and took a careful picture. It was a bit blurry from low light and slow shutter, so I crept forward and tried again.
It just sat there calmly as I inched forward.
The second shot was better, but still a bit blurry, so I decided to try one with the flash, in the certain knowledge that it would send the thing scurrying away, greatly offended.
It didn’t budge. It sat there calmly with a look of duckish disdain while I popped a flash at it from about ten feet away.
So I sauntered forward a bit more and tried again, flash and all, from about five feet away. And it didn’t move. It blinked a bit, so I knew it was alive, but that’s it. That last picture is the one I decided to use here, but I’m pretty sure that if I wanted an even closer shot I could go out right now and find the same duck still sitting there.
Calm.
Self assured.
Completely unflappable.
