Links!

Ok, I’m even more geeky than I ought to be. Not half an hour after getting Lynx up and running, I found another text based browser that I like better. It’s called Links.

Lynx!

This is really geeky-cool. I’ve got a text-only web browser up and running on the laptop.

And yes, I have a good reason. It’s for when I’ve got a slow dial-up connection and I need to check on things.

Vexing.

Of course, now that everything on the server seems to be going smoothly, our network administrators want to toss a wrench into the works.

Testing NetNewsWire

Just some behind-the-scenes stuff. For one thing, I upgraded the version of Movable Type to 2.62. It adds some features I might play with later. Another change that you all should never see is the update of the web-log stats software to version 5.4 from 5.3.

And finally this… I’m taking a test-drive of the full version of the RSS browsing software that I’ve used a couple of times. So far, I like the interface, but I’m not that fond of the actual editing. It improves text styling for the entry, but removes some of the finer control you get from Movable Type’s web interface. I’d like to be able to have more control of what shows up as the main body, where the extended entry begins, and what goes into the subheading ‘blurb.’

Anyway, those are my problems… So far, the full version is nice but I’m not likely to pay the $30 registration fee for ‘nice.’

Stay on target…

Got some of my first junk comments today. They’ve already been deleted, so don’t bother looking for them. It’s not like they were advertisements or porn spam or anything… More like the on-line equivalent of grafitti.

Shareware can be pretty keen.

I’ve found some excellent tools for work recently. The best part is that they’re all either exteremely inexpensive or free.

Who READS this stuff?

I’m working on improving the site logging for our web server, both for the work server and the user pages (like this one) that are hosted here… One of the things I’m enabling is the ‘referer’ log, basically tracking how people stumble across our site.

Tiny baubles, and the wine!

Those of you out there with a compatable browser and Sherlock Holmes’ eye for detail will have noticed a tiny addition to the location bar for this site. One of the great little perks about my job is that sometimes I get paid to experiment with really cool things.

And speaking of perks, the carboy full of pumpkin wine is perking away quite nicely!

Yeah, I know that’s kind of an awkward transition, but I’ve got two totally unrelated things to talk about and I wanted to use the same title for the blog entry.

Shallow end of the modem pool

There’s something wrong with my ISP’s modem pool. Often, it’ll take multiple attempts to get a working connection. The worst part is when one of their modems picks up and the computer sits there trying to negotiate a connection for ever.

That’s part of the reason that this post is going up at 1 in the morning…
