Remix Everything

I’m having fun listening to a batch of found sounds. The PC that Dirge loaned us to play EQ on had two folders of MP3s on the desktop, one labeled “For Mix CD” the other “Techno Covers Mix.” In some ways, listening to music like this is a borderline invasion of privacy. It’s the audio equivalent of going to someone’s house and peeking in the medicine cabinet when you use their bathroom. Only instead of passing judgment on their Smurf® dixie cup full of q-tips and the store brand deodorant, you can criticize their musical tastes.

Where?

Everyone remember the Thomas Dolby hit, “She Blinded Me With Science?” There’s a line in there, spoken by the mad scientist voice, proclaiming, “She’s tidied up and now I can’t find anything!”

I’m in a similar situation here, with the added complication that I may have inflicted the problem on myself.

The Chicken Riders

ChickenRiders.jpg
The kid in the striped shirt has obviously been captured some of the less famous Chicken Riders of Rohan…

Just a quick picture from the weekend. These were some of the cutest costumes at the whole Ren Fest. Because, after all, nothing says ‘cute’ like dressing up a pair of overalls so that it makes your kid look like he’s riding a gigantic mutant chicken.

I need to map this

My office will be moving in the next few months. We’re heading to a much nicer place, more centrally located for our clients, easier to find and more publicly visible. The new office is a touch smaller, but we’re getting secondary space off site for an auxiliary location too, which will give us both storage and a place to hide and work on tight deadline projects.

One thing I need to do for this is set up a map of the lights in the two locations, so that I can start testing a theory we’ve got. Y’see, it seems like most of the burnt out bulbs we have to deal with are located above wherever my desk happens to be.

Up, down, up, down, left, right, fire…

Upgrading your house is so much easier in the Kingdom of Loathing. None of this messing around with drywall and cement board. No inconveniently placed plumbing. Just grab a decorative fountain, a set of windchimes and the Feng-Shui for Big Dumb Idiots book, and tah-DAH!

That’ll make sense for about three people out there… Ah well.

Tile Madness

There are some times when I really like driving a small car… This morning, for example, I wound up with the last parking spot in the lot because all the other cars that were circling around were big SUV type things that wouldn’t fit.

On the other hand, sometimes it can be a pain. Especially if you need to haul heavy things. Right now, I’ve got the tiles, mortar, grouting and other gear for the bathroom floor in the back of the bug, and it weighs a ton.

Webcast Day 4 – Late Night

This seems an appropriate modified quote for you Dune fans out there:

It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that the thoughts acquire speed, the teeth acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion.

Webcast Day 3

Day three of the Transweb Webcast and it’s official – the University of Minnesota campus beats five kinds of good for the roses out of Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. Not to dis the Diz, but having the webcast headquarters in the hotel, along with having half a dozen really good restaurants within a half block radius and not having any restrictions against having food in the HQ office means that we’ve got much happier webcasters than before.

Webcast Day 2

The Transweb site is being updated as we speak. I just realized that I wasn’t terribly specific about what my job is here. Basically, we’ve got photographers and writers at as many events as we can cover. The photogs have digital cameras and they shoot between 200-400 pictures at each event. Between events, they stop by the office and transfer the pictures to me. I go through and pick the best shots for use on the web, then I crop, rotate, scale & convert them before uploading them to the site server where the page layout crew puts them up for public consumption.

Pagentry!

The opening ceremonies from the Transplant Games are probably still going on right now… I headed back here to the office about half an hour ago and they’d just gotten done with the parade of teams. My job there was backup photographer. There are two other photogs still working the arena, but my batteries were dead. So, it was time to head back to the office and go through the 2 gigs of photos that had been shot so far. That’ll give me a head start on things for when the ceremony is done and the others come back…

Ah, the thrill-a-minute life of a webcaster…
