Mac NWN

That’s Neverwinter Nights for the acronym impared. And it’s very nice indeed… I’ve tried out the tech beta on two machines so far, a three year old 15″ G4 powerbook and a much newer dual-800 MHz G4 tower machine.

And there goes my free time…

Well, the big news from www.macminute.com is that the Mac version of Neverwinter Nights is due to come out with a “Beta Tech Demo” tomorrow.

It was supposed to have come out around Christmas time. Last year. I don’t know what the delay was from, and frankly I don’t much care…

Hospital Food

The U of M Hospital cafeteria has improved drastically since I first began working here as a lowly tech support temp employee. Gone are the days of the “Starch Bar,” where (depending on the day) you could have either a baked potato or nachos covered with pretty much the same set of toppings. Also gone is “Obvious Leftover Casserole” which would usually follow a “Starch Bar” day, and which blatantly consisted of whatever toppings or ingredients weren’t finished off the day before.

As a really scary aside, according to the New York Times, in his civilian life the warrant officer in charge of food service for the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp “looks after the food needs of a dormitory at the University of Michigan.”

I think there may be a Geneva Convention violation or two going on… I lived in the dorms.

Notes from the Gaping Void

I used to have a page of reviews of various online comics. It’s archived somewhere, because I never throw anything away if I can avoid it. I’ll put it back up eventually, maybe as entries from here if I can’t think of anything else to write some day.

Anyway, I ran into a new online comic today. Well, it’s not exactly a comic. It’s sort of a tragic.

Bubba-Ho-Tep

I mentioned earlier that that on Saturday night we were driving up to the East Lansing Film Festival. We got there a little late to catch the beginning of “Gigantic” but we were in plenty of time for “Bubba-Ho-Tep.”

And a good thing too. It was packed. The film was showing in the ‘Hitchcock’ theater, which was basically a lecture hall with a projection booth. One of the festival organizers started the show off by heading down to the front, picking up a microphone and saying:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t have much to say about this film, so here’s Bruce Campbell.”

The ECC Crew

This is cool. Mark Gunderson, founder of the Evolution Control Committee has a blog. Before you all freak out at the name, I should point out that the ECC isn’t some kind of eugenics program or a cloning lab. It’s a band. Sorta.

Spicy Black Bean Burger

We’re eating healthy here in the land of Quirk. Calories are being counted, fat is being watched and the whole dining paradigm is being examined with an eye for trimness. We’ve got six months to get into Tuxedo and Wedding Dress shape and the Diet has become an important part of our lives.

In the Zome

One of the great things about my job (apart from having a server where I can test out blogging software) is that we get cool toys at educational prices.

The latest arrival is a set of geometric modeling gear from Zome Tools. It’s a series of plastic struts and connectors that you can use to build all sorts of mathematical models.
