Chocolate covered espresso beans do strange things when they’ve been sitting out in the freezing cold for a while.

Daytime TV

The only good thing about being sick is that, when you’re conscious, you can watch daytime television. I have memories of being sick from when I was young, and I remember watching game shows when I was in grade school. When I’m sick, I have strange nostalga for Campbell’s soup, peanut butter and jelly on saltine crackers and “The Price is Right.”

I hate being sick

There’s so much to do and my brain is a loose cluster of goo right now. I spent most of the day curled up in bed shivering and sweating. I had a few minutes of lucidity this afternoon, during which I forgot to call the wedding caterers, so I’m in the doghouse for that. We’re planning on calling it an early night, so we’re gonna miss the President’s State of the Union Address and the corresponding drinking game.

A Good Weekend

Just a couple of quick notes during lunch… First off some behind the scenes geek stuff: I’m loving the new logging system! I had a slight hiccup caused by a glitch in the server name and I was able to troubleshoot it just by looking at the web logs… Plus, I could see that people actually read this drivel of mine! Thanks!

Who READS this stuff?

I’m working on improving the site logging for our web server, both for the work server and the user pages (like this one) that are hosted here… One of the things I’m enabling is the ‘referer’ log, basically tracking how people stumble across our site.

Editing

Re-read yesterday’s entry… Jeez that was depressing… Sorry.

It’s been single-digit cold for a week or two now, dipping down below zero at night, and I guess it kinda got me down. I briefly considered going through and editing it, but I’ve kinda decided to leave things here ‘As-Is’ as a sort of yardstick of how my writing changes.

Gritty January

This is a month of slow erosion. It grinds you down a little bit every day. The days are starting to lengthen, but only by a blink or two each morning and evening. It’s so cold that your breath freezes in your beard, and your hands turn red and puffy from the wind biting through the seams in your gloves.

January chafes and rubs at you. It grinds down with icy files, smooths off with dark sandpaper and polishes you raw with salty grit.

I used to be in tech support

One of my early jobs, when I was a lowly student, was as a computer site monitor for the University library. My duties were fairly simple: When people came in, they needed to fill out a short form and leave their ID card. I’d give them a number corresponding to a computer and file their ID under that number. When they left, they’d give me back the number card, I’d give them back their ID and I’d put the form in a box for a supervisor to do the site statistics with later.

It wasn’t too complicated, but somehow people would still manage to screw things up.

Trouble concentrating

I think I may be tired today. I had a great weekend, but it’s kind of wearing on me now. I wound up taking a two hour nap after work without intending to. I just lay down for a few minutes with a book and it was instant sleep time.

And of course I keep rewriting all of this. Heck, I’ve even restarted this whole blog entry from scratch a couple of times. Anyway, there’s a fuzzy-brained political rant coming up, so if you want to skip this entry, go right ahead.
